As a tune-up for their upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifying games against the United States and Panama in November, Mexico will play a friendly against New Zealand this coming Saturday.
Having been under scrutiny ever since El Tri was eliminated from the Copa America Centenario in the summer, the matchup between the two teams at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee, is an opportunity for Mexico manager Juan Carlos Osorio to relieve some of that stress.
When Chile beat Mexico 7-0 in the finals of the Copa America, it was a devastating conclusion to Mexico’s tournament run. The September 0-0 tie with Honduras did little to win back the fans’ favour.
Even while a win over New Zealand in a friendly match isn’t likely to do the trick, anything less won’t be acceptable. Osorio stuck to his rotation approach when choosing his roster, leaving out players like Javier Hernandez, Hector Herrera, and Carlos Vela who are based in Europe.

Michael Boxall’s early own goal set the tone, but Russia didn’t put the game away until the middle of the second half. All this is by way of saying that Mexico, while being heavy favourites, shouldn’t take their opponents lightly.

Starting with a back five similar to their loss to Russia,
New Zealand is likely to sit back and soak up pressure. However, this has recently caused them significant offensive difficulties, as Anthony Hudson’s squad has failed to score in each of their previous three games, losing to Northern Ireland and Belarus along the way.
In contrast, Mexico has only lost once in their last 14 games across all competitions.
